Kris’ background and introduction to CrossFit began in the Military Special Operations Community. Prior to serving, Kris spent a solid year and a half physically preparing for the physical challenges the military would present. It was during this time he first heard about CrossFit while learning to train with kettlebells. After graduating from high school, Kris went straight into the Marine Corps infantry. After a short time, he was given the opportunity to enter the screening process to begin indoctrination as a Reconnaissance Marine. The indoctrination process and pipeline of schools necessary to become a Recon Operator are extremely grueling. This is where Kris learned what it felt like to truly push his body past its physical limits.
Kris Operated as a Recon Marine until 2007, when he was medically retired due to injuries he received while operating in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006. It was during this time that Kris truly realized the value of CrossFit as an exercise program. Following extensive physical therapy from his injuries, he needed a malleable program to work around his injuries. CrossFit gave him ultimate scalability! “Everyone can do some degree of CrossFit. This doesn’t mean everyone has to be able to Snatch, or Clean & Jerk. You can still fit the exercise to the individual. To me CrossFit is using functional movements that create strength and work capacity to do the things that you like to do.” This re-discovery of CrossFit gave him a new sense of purpose and an aspiration to help others on their journey to create a functional, strong, healthy body.
Kris became a Certified Fitness Trainer through the ISSA in June 2007. Thirsty for more knowledge, he attended a CrossFit Level 1 Certification in 2007 in Santa Cruz, CA. After personal training at commercial gyms Kris quickly became bored of the atmosphere and the lack of work ethic that surrounded such facilities. He wanted to train CrossFit full time at a CrossFit Facility. In the fall of 2008 Kris got his chance when CrossFit Maximus (originally CrossFit Lexington) opened its doors.
